China’s Van Gogh: Zhao Xiaoyong

Dropout, refugee, migrant worker, apprentice, migrant worker, painter, artist… Over nearly 40 years in Shenzhen, Zhao Xiaoyong’s identity has constantly shifted and evolved. From being penniless after dropping out of school, to picking up a paintbrush and building a family, and then achieving overnight fame through the documentary “China’s Van Gogh”, Zhao Xiaoyong has truly lived a surreal and magical life.

Born in 1972 in Shaoyang, Hunan, Zhao Xiaoyong arrived in Shenzhen in 1989 to make his way in the word. He slept under bridges, worked in Zhangmutou, did odd jobs, and served as an apprentice, In 1996, after a series of twists and turns, he settled in Dafen Village as a painter, ending his life of uncertainty. He has been painting for over 30 years, copying more than 200,000 works, especially excelling in replicating Van Gogh’s paintings. Since 1997, when he began copying Van Gogh’s works in Dafen Village, Zhao Xiaoyong has painted over 100,000 pieces in the style of Van Gogh, earning him the title of “China’s Van Gogh”

In 2014, Zhao Xiaoyong focused on creating his own works, successfully transitioning from a migrant worker painter to an artist. His rise to become “China’s Van Gogh” is attributed to his ability to meet the demands of reality through sheer willpower, while still holding onto his ideals and pursuing them with determination.

In 2016, the documentary “China’s Van Gogh”, which tells the story of Shenzhens Dafen Oil Painting Village, was released, bringing Zhao Xiaoyong, the “migrant worker painter”, into the global spotlight. The documentary was screened worldwide, inspiring countless dreamers.

Zhao Xiaoyong’s story of perseverance has created a series of milestones along his journey, much like a minibus passing through various stops, allowing nearly every struggler in Shenzhen to see their own reflection. This art exhibition marks the prologue of Zhao Xiaoyong’s artistic career and a beautiful movement in the story of spring.
